¿Peregrinaciones en el Caribe?

Resumen
Espenshade (2014) ha argumentado que las principales plazas precolombinas de Puerto Rico, particularmente con arte rupestre, podrían considerarse lugares religiosos especiales. Propone que estos recintos pasaron de ser lugares de actividades sociales y ceremoniales comunales que integraban diversos segmentos de la población a espacios con funciones cada vez más restringidas a lo religioso, como santuarios o centros de peregrinación, que servían a una población local muy reducida a finales del periodo pre-colonial. El grado de incorporación de las plazas de la fase precolonial tardía a una ronda de peregrinación formal para la isla de Puerto Rico se examina empleando datos arqueológicos de las Antillas Mayores y Menores. El análisis considera que, aunque el argumento de Espenshade sobre estos recintos como lugares de peregrinación puede ser o no apropiado, el simple hecho de plantear la cuestión incita y hace necesaria consideraciones más amplias de la estructura ritual de la región del Caribe, que incluya sitios con y sin expresiones de arte rupestre.
