Ciencia y Sociedad, an international journal with an inter- and multi-transdisciplinary orientation and the leading publication for scientific dissemination in the Dominican Republic, calls collaborators and authors interested in submitting their research articles, essays, literature review articles, book reviews, or reviews of other sources for Vol. 51 No. 2 of 2026.
Ciencia y Sociedad will focus this special issue on the topic Invisible Islands: Interdisciplinary Studies on the Cultural Construction of Insular Territories,with the objective of reflecting on islands as remote and frontier territories, clearly differentiated from continents and often beyond visual and mental reach. This edition aims to contribute to the study of this subject from diverse analytical scales and an interdisciplinary perspective, integrating fields such as literature, history, geography, sociology, philosophy, ecology, archaeology, and anthropology.
The relevant themes for this special issue are:
- Non-existent, erroneous, or mythical islands. Narratives and graphic representations.
- Disappeared islands. Physical, social, and symbolic transformations.
- From the landscape to the memory. Geological, historical, and political processes in insular territories.
- Literary archipelagos and insular fictions. Islands as narrative settings, parallel worlds, or metaphors for isolation and utopias.
- Disputed insular territories: sovereignty, autonomy, and fluid borders.
- Island cultures: memory, identity, and symbolic practices.
- Archipelagic thinking: philosophy, ontology, and ethics of insular dwelling.
- Island visualities: cinema, photography, and art as territorial archive.
- Tourism, heritage, and identity in island contexts.
- Intersections between gender, territory, and culture in island contexts.
- Colonized, resisted, and reimagined islands: decolonial perspectives.
The papers may be submitted in Spanish or English languages through the platform https://revistas.intec.edu.do/index.php/ciso.
Contributions will be evaluated according to the editorial standards and review policies established by Ciencia y Sociedad, considering the opinions of the community of academics and experts in island topics, to guarantee the relevance, quality, justification, importance, methodological consistency, and empirical support of the proposed study.
